Since last autumn, an unexpected visitor has taken up residence in the Bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, just a few nautical miles from Hendaye. A young female bottlenose dolphin, aged between 5 and 8 years, two metres long and weighing around 200 kg, has chosen these familiar waters as her daily home. Within just a few weeks, she became the true mascot of the Basque Country — beloved by locals and holidaymakers alike.
Photos and videos have been circulating on social media for months. She can be seen playing in boat wakes, approaching kayakers, and sometimes even swimming alongside bold bathers. Her apparent ease around humans fascinates as much as it concerns marine specialists.
"She has become part of this magnificent landscape, as if she had always been here."
Behind the public enthusiasm lies a more troubling reality. Scientists and marine conservation groups are sounding the alarm: this dolphin's fame could prove fatal. A marine mammal that grows accustomed to human presence gradually loses its natural wariness — a reflex essential to its survival.
Engine noise, boats approaching too quickly, swimmers trying to touch her — all of this generates chronic stress that the animal can only express by fleeing, or by developing abnormal behaviours. Cases of solitary dolphins too habituated to humans rarely end well.
While this female is currently in the spotlight, she is far from alone. The Basque Coast is one of the most active migration corridors in the Bay of Biscay for cetaceans. Common bottlenose dolphins, short-beaked common dolphins, harbour porpoises, and occasionally passing orcas — these waters are far richer than most people imagine.
As a skipper, I have had the privilege of observing them for years. The most beautiful encounters are always those where the animal comes of its own accord to bow-ride our boat, curious and free. These moments cannot be forced — they must be welcomed, with respect and wonder.
On our boat trips departing from Hendaye, dolphin sightings are frequent — always with full respect for their space and freedom.
